Cod fishing – The Droke

My husbands uncle Shawn, fishing at the Droke, Jobs Cove, CBN, NL

It was the most beautiful day, warm and sunny, the capelin were dancing on top of the water. A sight I had never seen before. Astonished to say the very least. Everyone had gathered here young, old families and friends. There was a friendly face everywhere I turned. A real sense of community. I suppose you couldn’t help but smile with all the excitement. That first day everybody was catching fish, everybody but me that was. I wasn’t going to forget my pole the next night. You can hear my excitement and feel the wonderful energy here in this video.

Better than Christmas!
Just look at all the capelin!

Jobs Cove is a small community not too far from our place. My husbands grandmother Nellie ( Helen) English/ Hyde was from there. Its quite beautiful down at The Droke as you can see here.

I managed to catch my first cod this year How exciting that was, I cleaned and gutted the fish myself and then cleaned and dried all the cod skins for the dogs. I was super impressed with the character of the people gathered everyone was happy and happy to help each other out. If you didn’t catch a fish someone was sure you had a meal for supper. That’s what I loved the most.

My 1st codfish ever! Super exciting!
Just look at the capelin dancing!

Heres a link to my facebook its a video of Uncle Shawn helping a lady with a big fish! Dangerous!

Anyway, to say the very least, We had one of the best days ever. A new family tradition for sure. If you ever have the chance to visit Newfoundland and Labrador, I do hope you get to enjoy this true Newfoundland experience. Here’s a few more pics of our Jobs cove cod fishing adventure.

Here’s a quick way I like my cod. Heat a frying pan with oil until nice and hot fry fish coated with flour for 3-3 & 1/2 Mins. per side. Turning only once add a generous tablespoon of butter just before you take it off the pan. Season with salt, pepper and dill if desired. I also smother mine in vinegar, you can add a squeeze of lemon juice if desired.

Pan fried straight from the Droke

Here’s a wonderful place to start should you ever want to visit this beautiful province we call home https://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com
